From early times, man has been interested in art. People have often worked together to collect and save the world’s art treasures.

Fine art treasures from many countries are kept in an art museum called the Louvre(卢浮宫) in Paris, France. The works of art have been collected by the people of France over many centuries. It is the biggest art museum in the world.

The Louvre has not always been a museum. The first building was a fort(城堡). In 1190, it was the king’s castle with high walls and a round tower. It had a moat(护城河) to keep out the enemies.

Over the years, the number of buildings around the castle grew. By1350, the castle no longer needed a fort. The Louvre became a palace home for French kings and queens.

During time of peace, new treasures were brought in. During the days of war, many treasures were stolen, and the buildings were damaged.

When Francis I became king of France in 1515, he brought in many artists from other countries. One of the artists was Leonardo da Vinci from Italy. Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” is the best-known painting in the museum today.

In 1793, the Louvre became a public museum, just as it is now. It is a place where art treasures are kept for everyone to enjoy. Every year millions of people from all over the world come to the Louvre to see the masterpieces.

57. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. Da Vinci once stayed in France.

B. “Mona Lisa” is kept in the Louvre.

C. The Louvre was once a church as well as a palace.

D. The Louvre is a place of interest to different peoplefrom all over the world.

The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play an important role in the process of recovery from illness.

As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries(陈列室) and into public places, some of the country’s best-known artists have been called in to change older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2, 500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have valuable collections of contemporary(当代的') art in corridors, waiting areas and treatment rooms.

These recent movements owea great deal to one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost their places in modern society and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience.

A common hospital waiting room might have as many as 5, 000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold regular exhibitions of art! Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the out-patients waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates.

The effect is striking. Now in the corridors and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colours, playful images and restful courtyards.

The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering from an illness. A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only brick wall to look at.

59. According to the passage, we can learn that Peter Senior is _____.

A. a doctor interested in art

B. an artist who refuses to hold art exhibitions in hospitals

C. a pioneer in introducing art into hospitals

D. an artist who is very rich

60. According to Peter Senior, we can infer that ______.

A. modern hospitals have lost a lot of patients

B. art is not enjoyed by a large number of people in modern society

C. patients should be encouraged to learn painting

D. artists can not find their positions in modern society

61. Six young art school graduates joined Peter Senior because ______.

A. they thought Peter Senior’s idea was very exciting

B. Peter Senior needed artists more intelligent than him

C. they wanted to enjoy Peter Senior’s popularity

D. more and more hospitals need artists to improve their environment

62. The underlined word “striking”(in Paragraph 5) probably means “______”.

A. common B. unusualC. attractiveD. valuable

C

With 35 million copies in print, in 35 languages, the first three Harry Potter books have earned $480 million in three years. And that was just the warm-up. With a first printing of 5.3 million copies and advance orders topping 1.8 million, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, promises to break every book-selling record in the book.

Why is Harry so hot?

There is plenty for children and grown-ups to enjoy in Rowling’s books, starting with their language. Her prose may be unadorned (朴实的), but her way with naming people and things shows an original talent(才能).

The best writers remember what it is like to be a child with surprising intensity(强烈). Time and again, Rowling describes just how defenseless(无助的) even the bravest children often feel. Near the end of the second book Dumbledore, the wise and protective headmaster, is banished(赶走) from Hogwarts. This frightens Harry and his schoolmates —“With Dumbledore gone, fear had spread as never before” — and it frightened me. And in all of Rowling’s books there runs an undercurrent(隐藏的情绪) of sadness and loss. In the first book Harry stares into the Mirror of Erised, which shows the viewer his or her utmost desires. Harry sees his dead parents. “Not until I’d reread what I’d written did I realize that that had been taken completely — completely — from how I felt about my mother’s death,” Rowling said. “In fact, death and losing one’s parent and what death means, I would say, is one of the central themes(主题) in all seven books.” The book would have their broad interest if they were only exciting tales of magical adventure, and grown-ups would not find them so attractive.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Harry is so hot.

63. According to the writer, why is Harry so hot?

A. The story is full of magic.

B. There is plenty for children and adults to enjoy.

C. The language is beautiful.

D. Death is the central theme in the book.

64. What does the underlined word “promise” (in Paragraph 1) probably mean?

A. To tell someone you will certainly do something.

B. To make something seem likely.

C. To be sure to do something.

D. To think that something is true.

65. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the fourth Harry Potter book.

B. Only children are interested in the Harry Potter books.

C. What Rowling writes in the book has no relation with herself.

D. Rowling’s way with naming people and things is very common.

Some time ago ,I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg.I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended ,as there are a whole lot of antique(古董)shops near my home.So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me.I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception(接待).I was quite wrong. The man wouldn't oven look at my chair.

The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth - so I decided that my approach must be wrong.

I went into the fifth shop with a plan in my mind.I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper,“ Would you like to buy a chair?” He looked it over carefully and said,“ Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir?” “Twenty pounds,”I said.“OK, ”he said, “I’ll give you twenty pounds.”“It ‘s got a slightly broken leg,”I said.“Yes, I saw that, it's nothing.”

Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited.“What will you do with it?”I asked.“Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.”“I'll buy it,”I said.“What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,”he said.“Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind.I'm sorry, I'll give you twenty -seven pounds for it.”“ Your must be crazy, ”he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped.“I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.”“ You’re right, ”I said.“And what would you have done if I had walked in and said,’Would you mend this chair for me I wouldn't have agreed to do it,” he said.“We don’t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I’ll mend this for you, shall we say for a fiver?”He was a very nice man and was greatly amused(感到有趣)by the whole thing.

Have you ever dreamed of visiting a planet in the Milky Way (银河系)? While the trip sounds exciting, it would take years and years to reach your destination. So in the future, bedtime for astronauts may be more than a few hours of regular shut eye. They would have to sleep for years.

European researchers are now conducting hibernation experiments. The study may help them understand whether humans could ever sleep through the years it would take for a spaceflight to distant planets.“If there was an effective technology, it could make deepspace travel a reality,” said Mark Ayre of the European Space Agency last month.

What seems like a science fiction is not completely unlikely.Researchers have been able to use chemicals to put living cells into a sleeplike state where they don’t age. They have now moved on to the small, nonhibernating mammals (哺乳动物) like rats.

A major challenge is the fact that cells can be very simple systems, whereas body organs are far more complex (复杂的).“It’s like moving from a simple Apple computer to a supercomputer,” said Marco Biggiogera, a hibernation researcher at Italy’s University of Pavia.Just like bears and frogs, the hibernation of human beings would cause a person’s metabolism (新陈代谢) to lower so they would need less energy.

Medical research, however, is just half of a spaceflight hibernation system. There is a challenge of designing a suitable protective shelter (栖身所).Such a shelter would provide the proper environment for hibernation, such as the proper temperature. It would also have to monitor (监控) life functions and serve the physiological needs of the hibernator.

According to Ayre, the sixperson Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission (使命) to Jupiter’s moon (木星的卫星) Callisto, could be an opportunity to use human hibernation. The mission aims to send six persons on a fiveyear flight to Callisto, where they will spend 30 days, in 2045.

5.According to the article, the hibernation research _______.

A.is just an idea B.is always a science fiction

C.has already finished successfully D.has made some progress

6.In a hibernating state, a person needs ________.

A.less sleep B.more food C.less energy D.more movement

7.The first try of the hibernation technologythe sixperson Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission to Jupiter’s moon Callisto.

A.will be B.has been planned for

C.is certain to be D.may be

8.What is the best title of the article?

A.Hibernation study for space travel B.Welcome to our space travel

C.To hibernate, to live longer D.Welcome to the Milky Way

This problem may lead to more serious ones if it is left unsolved.

不仅”,other than的意思是“除了”,less than的意思是“少于.决不”。在此处只有选项C最符合本句意义:除了梦想过上好生活,我没有别的梦想了。

3.C any better意为好了一点,符合日常生活对话情景。much better.no better虽符合语法,但不符合该题语境。

4.C cover=be enough for sth.

5.B make sb.into sb.

6.D before在本句中意为rather than sth

7.A sort of达到某种程度

由句中的years ago可知这里是对过去发生事情的揣测,因此应用could have imagined。

very在定冠词the之后,而much则在the之前。

15.B 这里Most相当于Most of the,表示“大多数”。

根据reviewing their lessons for the exams可推知。

由have to retake them可推知。

3、选B。由Jane didn’t want to be one of them合前一句话可推知。

4、选A。

从下句的she should have an early night可推知,临近考试时她睡得很迟。

7、选A。

8、选A。

16、选A。根据look at和Time was running out 可推知。

17、选A。

1.drink→drinking 2.His the去掉the 3.them→it 4.meant→meaning 5.bottles后加of 6.late→later 7.paying→pay 8.pleasant→pleased

A

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while – then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home.

41. The writer of this passage must be __________.

A. an American B. a Chinese C. a professor D. a student

42. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.

B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.

C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.

D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.

43. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ___________.

A. warmly welcomed at the airport B. offered a ride to his home

C. treated hospitably at his home D. treated to dinner in a restaurant

44. The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean _______ .

A. strict with time B. serious with time.

C. careful with time D. willing to spend time

45. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “_________”.

A. Friendships between Chinese B. Friendships between Americans

C. Americans’ hospitality D. Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendships

Norm Pethrick, a 36-year-old man in Australia’s northern city Darwin, was praised on Thursday for jumping onto a crocodile’s back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported.

Ms Pethrick was standing on a river bank Wednesday afternoon when the saltwater crocodile lunged (扑), locking its jaws on both her legs as it tried to drag her underwater.

Norm Pethrick, who with his wife had been collecting water, immediately went to help her. He jumped onto the back, poked (戳) the eyes of the crocodile and finally got his wife free.

Ms Pethrick was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for a medical treatment. The doctors said she was suffering eight puncture wounds (伤口) in her right leg, a puncture wound in her left leg and a serious cut to one of her fingers.

“This could have been a fatal and tragic situation,” said the general manager of Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH), Dr Len Notaras, according to a local report.

He said Ms Pethrick was saved by her husband’s “quick and diligent actions”.

Dr Notaras also said she would remain in hospital for three or four days and have an operation to clean the wounds, which are easy to get infected because of bacteria (细菌) on the teeth of the crocodile.

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all the languages, English has the largest vocabulary – perhaps as many as two million words.

However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine or apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾) , we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.

And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese – so one moose, two meese?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

51. According to the passage ________. Ks5u

A. sweet-meats and sweet-breads are different things B. there should be egg in an eggplant

C. pineapples are the apples on the pine apple tree D. boxing rings should be round

52. Which of the following is the correct plural?

A. Beeth. B. Geese. C. Meese. C. Tooth.

53. Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?

A. A wise man and a wise guy. B. Overlook and oversee.

C. Quite a lot and quite a few. D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.

54. The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph probably mean _________.

A. blow B. roll up C. get hurt D. finish

55. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are __________ .

A. clever B. crazy C. lazy D. dull

D

Feeling satisfied with yourself and your life can actually protect against cancer, strokes (中风) accidents and more. Happiness not only makes you good, but it’s good for you.

Being happy can prevent-

Cancer. One Swedish study showed that people who were unhappy at work had a 5.5 times greater risk of getting colon cancer than happier ones. Why? Recent research suggests depression (沮丧) weakens the body’s disease-fighting defenses.

Strokes. Happy people are less likely to develop high blood pressure, a major risk factor for strokes, says, Lyle H. Miller, Ph.D.

Diabetes (糖尿病). The unhappiness that results from stress can sometimes bring about diabetes, according to Miller’s research. If stress is a long time, this can wear out the pancreas (胰腺) and possibly cause it to produce too little insulin (胰岛素). That’s why people suffer diabetes.

Here are a few ways to stay happy and healthy:

1. Fix attention on the positive, like good health and a loving family. If you start enjoying what you have, you’ll feel happier.

2. Stop wishing for what you don’t have. People who feel satisfied are happier with their lives. “Satisfaction isn’t getting what you want; it’s wanting what you have,” says David G. Myers, Ph.D.

3. Choose to be happy. “ Happiness is a belief, so make up your mind to be happy,” says Wayne Dyer.

4. Stay connected with other people you love. “Social support – feeling liked and encouraged by friend and family – develop happiness and good health,” says Myers.

5. Get “high” on exercise.

56. Being happy can prevent all the following EXCEPT_______.

A. cancer B. strokes C. diabetes D. insulin

57. The unhappy people are more likely to get cancer because _______.

A. stress can cause pancreas to produce too little insulin

B. they work so hard that they are in poor health

Large groups of people can share their discussions by using electronic lists to send every letter to everyone on the list. Electronic magazines bring you up-to-date topics, such as news, arts, and sports. Search engines allow you to look for anything you want on the Internet, including the holdings of major libraries. In a chat room you can have a real-time written talk. Audio and video bring the world to your computer -— you can listen to the world's radio stations, watch the evening news from another continent. With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the endangered species. That’s a move similar to what Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.

Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen(氮). If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds, reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”

Pingyao, in the center of Shanxi Province, is a famous historic cultural city of China and a world cultural heritage site It’s 90 kilometers south of Taiyuan on the Fen River.

People lived in Pingyao during the New Stone Age. Its long period as a country government seat has left Pingyao with lots of historic buildings and sites, with a 2,700-year history. Ninety-nine of them are under government protection, including Zhengguo Temple, Shuanglin Temple and Pingyao Ancient City.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, businessmen organized commercial (商业的) groups that did business nationwide. Shanxi Province had some of the most important ones and Pingyao was their center. In 1823, a store, known as Rishengchang(Sunrise Prosperity), traded in bank checks rather than in silver or gold coins. It was the beginning of modern Chinese banking. Branch banks were soon set up in major cities in China and other parts of Asia, leading to great development in Pingyao. Its Lacquer ware (漆器) became well known.

In Pingyao Ancient City are many traditional houses and commercial buildings, 3,797 of which are protected and more than 400 of which are in good condition. Not only do the houses in Pingyao show Shanxi’s history and culture, but this large number is valuable for studying its history, customs, and ancient buildings and art. Most of these houses are still used as homes and shops of local people.

In , Ancient Pingyao City was listed in World Heritage List as “World Culture Heritage Site”.

D

A peer is a person who is about the same age as you. Peers affect your life, whether you know it or not, just by spending time with you.

Peers can have a good effect on one another. Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember the planets in solar system. Maybe you got others excited about your new favorite book and now everyone’s reading it.

However, sometimes peers affect one another in another way. For example, one kid in school might try to get another to cut class with him, your soccer friend might try to persuade you to be mean to another player and never pass her the ball, or a kid in the neighborhood might want you to shoplift with him. Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, to fit in, or because they worry that other kids may make fun of them if they don’t go along with the group. Others may go along because they are curious to try something new that others are doing. The idea that “everyone’s doing it” may influence some kids to leave their better judgments or their common senses behind.

Peer pressure can be extremely strong and hard to get rid of. Experiments have shown how peer pressure can influence someone to change her/ his mind from what she/ he knows for sure is a correct answer to the incorrect answer-just because everyone else gives the incorrect answer! That holds true for people of any age in peer pressure situations.

It can be hard to walk away from peer pressure, but it can be done. Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and wrong can help you know the right thing to do. Inner strength and self-confidence can help you stand firm, walk away and resist doing something when you know better.

68. What is the best title for this passage?

A. Peers have a good effect B. Children give in to peer pressure

C. Peer pressure is hard to resist D. Peer pressure

69. The underlined word “shoplift” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.

A. do some shopping B. carry goods for shops

C. steal in shops D. take the lift upstairs in shops

70. The writer will NOT agree that ________.

A. only children change their correct answers to incorrect ones because of peer pressure

B. peers have an effect on one another

C. peer pressure can be got rid of

D. peers will believe in themselves if there are other peers who agree with them

71. By writing the passage the writer intends to ________.

A. tell people to follow other’s opinions

B. warn people to stay away from their peers

C. tell it is hard to walk away from pressure

D. persuade people to do the right thing regardless of peer pressure

Do Dreams Count?

Did you ever have a dream? Did you realize your dream? Did you start on your way to realizing a dream only to let other life’s events stand in your 41 ? Did you make some first steps only to find same hurdles that 42 you to give up?

Several years ago, I had a dream about inventing a board game. Along with a partner, those dreams were turned into goals that were translated to 43 steps. After many long hours and many revisions, a board game was developed. Then came the issue of money. Not to be 44 by this hurdle, a plan was developed and carried out, and a real live company was created. Then came marketing strategies, TV appearances, newspaper articles, weekend promotion and radio commercials.

It was an exciting time. The one time dream seemed to 45 with sales starting to increase, a sale possibly 46 to a large and established game board company. Then, it happened. Introduced to the board game market was one of the biggest companies 47 seen before, and the business came to a stop. How 48 after all the hours of work, the hours of marketing, promotion, not to 49 the loss of our own financial investment.

Did it mean being unsuccessful to me? I didn’t succeed to the level I wanted or desired, but to me, at the very 50 I lived my dream by turning it into a reality. If I had never turned my dream into goal and then to action, I would have always wondered--- 51 ? Was it then a failure? No. Was it the success I’d hoped for? No. But, there were valuable 52 to be learned. 53 , how many people had immediate success 54 their first attempt? Failure is our greatest teacher as long as the experience is viewed as lessons.

It may take a few more attempts, but success is only achieved. Will success come on the next adventure, or the next one after that, or will it take many more? Who is to say? The important point here is that success only comes by turning dreams into reality and realizing that 55 are only stepping-stones to final success.

The health benefits of cycling and walking outweigh the harmful effects of air pollution, a study has suggested.

Air pollution contributes to 40,000 early deaths each year in the UK and we breathe in more of it when we exercise. on the other hand, regular exercise reduces the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and several cancers. The University of Cambridge study shows that even in cities with high pollution levels, the benefits outweigh the risks.

The researcher used computer simulations(模拟) to compare data on different kinds of physical activity and different levels of air pollution in different places around the world.

It found that for an average air pollution concentration in an urban area, the tipping point----when the risks being to outweigh the benefits---comes after a huge 7 hours of cycling or 16 hours of walking a day. It is far beyond what most people would ever do.

“Even in Delhi, one of the most polluted cities in the world---with pollution levels 10 times those in London---people would need to cycle over 5 hours per week before the pollution risks outweigh the health benefits,” said Dr.Marko Tainio, the lead author of the study.

He added, “We should remember, though, that a small minority of workers in the most polluted cities, such as bike messengers, may be exposed to levels of air pollution high enough to cancel out the health benefits of physical activity.”

The study, published in Preventive Medicine, said exercise was always beneficial in London.

The average air pollution level for cities around the globe is 22 micrograms per cubic metre, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In London the air pollution level was recorded at 16 micrograms per cubic metre in 2011.

Senior author Dr James Woodcock added, “While this research shows the benefits of physical activity in spite of air quality, it is not an argument for inaction in fighting against pollution.

“It provides further support for investment in infrastructure(基础设施)to get people out of their cars and onto their feet or their bikes, which can itself reduce pollution levels at the same time as supporting physical activity.”

B. Bike messengers suffer more in the most polluted cities

58. The study is mainly aimed at ________.

A. warning people of harmful effects of air pollution

B. calling on people in London to do sports outdoors

C. comparing air pollution in London with that in other places

D. comparing air pollution in London with that in other places

Still remember the magic umbrella in the classic Disney film Mary Poppins? Now, it has a math. Giving it some serious competition is the al new high-tech “Oombrella”---it not only can predict the weather, but it’s also impossible to lose. The smart umbrella, which is connected with a smartphone app, sends users updates about weather conditions 30 minutes in advance and reminders if they happen to leave the device behind. And here’s the added benefit---it won’t ever flip inside-out.

Designed by a French company Wezzoo, the rainbow-colored Oombrella comes in two forms---classic and modern. The classic is 3.1-foot long with a curved handle, while the modern one is 0.8-foot long with a straight handle. The company describes the device as a “portable weather station”, made of a reflective surface with built-in sensors(传感器) that record real-time data such as light, humidity, pressure, and temperature. The Oombrella collects and processes this data as well as information from a social media community before sending out information about when it’s going to start raining. And if the user happens to forget it at home on a possibly rainy day, or leaves it in a restaurant, information will be sent out using GPS technology to make sure you don’t lose it.

“We wanted to make this umbrella unforgettable in terms of design, too,” explains Alexandre, of Escabo design studio. “We developed a unique material. It makes you feel you are holding an aurora borealis(北极光) in your hands. It has amazing effects with the light always changing. It really makes the Oombrella special.” The “capsule”(胶囊) that involves all the technology, making the umbrella smart, is placed in the handle.

The Oombrella is all set to hit global online and physical stores this fall. According to a company spokesperson, it will retain at €79($86), but the early bird price on Kickstarter is €59($64). For those who are rather attached to their current umbrellas, the company will also release an “Oombrella capsule” that can turn any umbrella into a smart device. Now, if only it could make us fly like Mary Poppins!

59. What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph indicate?

A. The two umbrellas will take party in a match

B. Oombrella is as magic as Mary Poppins’ umbrella

C. Mary Poppins’ umbrella will find it hard to survive the match

D. Oombrella makes Mary Poppins’ umbrella a thing of the past

60. What largely makes Oombrella different from other umbrella?

a. It never flips inside-out

b. It is expensive

c. It is rainbow-colored

d. It won’t be lost

e. It offers two forms

f. It can forecast the weather condition

g. Its material is unique

A. a d f g B. a b c d C. c d e g D. b c d g

61. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Oombrella is likely to make us fly like Mary Poppins

B. Oombrella will be popular all over the world in no time

C. Not all people will add changes to their traditional umbrella

D. Without the smartphone app, Oombrella would completely fail to work

C

I was in the Santa Cruz Mountains not long ago, speaking and singing at a women’s conference. We were focusing on the theme of loving others in practical ways through our gifts. During that period of time, something particular happened that remain impressive in my memory as a beautiful presentation of this practice.

A young Syrian woman (“Lilith”) had been invited to the conference at the last minute, and everyone seemed surprised and delighted that she'd actually come. Just a few days earlier, Lilith had fled her country and found refuge with one of the women attending the conference. As an Orthodox Christian in Syria, she and her loved ones had become targets of violent terrorist group in the country's civil war.

Lilith had experienced horrors no one of her age should ever see. Despite the further danger it presented, she'd decided to leave her home and her family to find safety here in America. Lilith's story touched all of us, including Pam, an attendee who was a quilt (被子) maker. Pam had just finished a fantastic, beautifully-patterned quilt, and had brought it with her. She, along with a few of the leaders, decided to give it to Lilith as a symbol of their comfort and love. Lilith had left her own mother behind in her homeland, and I can't imagine how frightened and alone she felt. But in her absence I could see there were lots of “mamas” in this community of women who were more than ready to show their love.

During our last session together Lilith was called forward and prayed over, hugged, and wrapped up in that beautiful quilt. I thought of the many hours Pam undoubtedly spent working on it, unaware of the horrible events that would lead Lilith to this moment-- surrounded by the beauty and love the quilt represented. I cried. When they told her it was for her, she was moved to tears. We were all touched, wiping our eyes.

I thought about the words from the Bible. Serve one another with the particular gifts God has given each of you, as faithful givers of the grace(恩赐) of God. The words suggest to me that there may be as many gifts as there are people and personalities. A quilt wrapped around a poor young woman is just one practical, loving act of service that shows God's grace.

It's the particular things we do that we sometimes think are too small or unimportant compared to the huge suffering we meet. But to do nothing when we see a chance--to serve, to comfort, to ease another's pain--is to refuse whatever aspect of God's grace that our gift offers.

62. The underlined word “refuge” in the second paragraph means__________.

A. help from people abroad B. grace from the God

C. peace from outside world D. protection from danger

63. Which of the following statements can be inferred from the text?

A. We all burst into tears for we can do little to help Lilith

B. “Mamas” in the community will love Lilith with warmth

C. It’s safe for Lilith to run away alone from Syria to America

D. The quilt maker Pam prepared the quilt in advance for Lilith’s coming

64. The author used words from the Bible to suggest that _______.

A. the quilt is too small a gift to stand for different personalities

B. huge sufferings we meet with will make us value a loving act

C. a small act actually serves the purpose of presenting God’s grace

D. different presents should be given to show God’s grace and personalities

65. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?

A. Lilith gets God’s grace

B. Mamas show love to Lilith

C. A loving act makes a difference

D. Quilts play a vital role in showing God’s grace

China has 1 in 5 of all college students in the world

In 1949 when the People’s Republic of China was founded, only 117,000 students were attending colleges or universities. But the number rose to 37 million in 2015---the world’s largest student population.

China’s higher education system has developed quickly and contributed greatly to the country’s development during the past seven decades, the report said.

The number of colleges universities in the country now stands at almost 2,900, and is second only to the United States.

The report also shows that expenditures(费用) on higher education have increased greatly in recent years - as has the number of educators, the amount of real estate and teaching resources.

“The fast development of higher education in China has offered more ordinary Chinese people the opportunity to attend college. It has also provided intelligent support for the dramatic transformation of Chinese society,” said Wu Yan, director of the Higher Education Evaluation Center. “Colleges and universities are playing increasingly important roles in the country's efforts to innovate(创新).”

But the report has also found that China's higher education system has problems to overcome.

It mentions a low transfer rate for scientific research achievements, inadequate education in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship and a phenomenon that gives more weight in educators' performance assessments to research success than to their teaching ability.

Zhong Binglin, director of the Chinese Society of Education, said it will take time to solve the problems.

“There is still much to be done for most colleges and universities to catch up with world-class universities,” he said.

“To improve China's higher education, reforms should be continued, more resources should be allocated and advanced educational ideas should be introduced to create a good learning atmosphere and to cultivate students' innovative abilities.”
